The resplendent quetzal was once considered divine, and associated with the god Quetzalcoatl. Their iridescent green tail feathers were symbols for spring plant growth, and were venerated by the ancient Aztecs. They viewed the quetzal as the “god of the air” and as a symbol of goodness and light.
They are sexually dimorphic, and the females plumage usually have spots of brown or grey. Despite their bright colours, they are hard to spot in trees.
